Apolitical Speech

September 12, 2006 / by nobullthinker

The president has lied again. He was not able to fool the Left for one hot minute. He said he would not make a political speech and then he went right ahead and made one anyway. Could this be the grounds for impeachment the Dems have been looking for?

The president may not be the brightest bulb on the political marquee but he's not a liar. It was foolish of him to think it was even possible to make a non-political speech. Everything a politician says, does or might possibly even have once thought is subject to political scrutiny. G.W. ought to have learned that when he got castrated for the nasty weather in New Orleans last year.

The plain truth is that it is impossible for the president of the United States to make a speech that is not political. In 1952 Vice-president Nixon made a speech that saved his career and eventually would lead him to the office of president. He made the speech because he was under suspicion of some ethical infraction or another. In it he spoke of his wife's 'old cloth coat' and his dog named Checkers. Probably one the 10 most famous speeches in American history. It is known today as the "Checkers Speech".

Was it about a coat and a dog? Of course not. A speech is always political even if you don't want it to be.

The one great benefit of capturing the office is you get to make a speech whenever you want, about any subject you want. There's not a thing wrong with it. I thought last night's speech was one of his best.

If I had to name G.W.'s three greatest failings one of them would have to be his failure to address the nation about 5 times as often as he has.

The other two; failure to control spending & failure to control immigration.

As I recall, during the first year of the Eisenhower there was a hubbub about Press Secretary Sherman Adams receiving an expensive vicuna coat for his wife. DDE was a stickler for clean government, so he canned Adams immediately. When there were whispers about a similar coat for Mrs Nixon, DDE invited Mr Nixon to defend on national TV. He responded with youthful vigor giving a classic performance. The kinescope is a must for every political nut.[THUMBUP]

If GW turned towards the west and sneezed it would be considered political. Just like one of the speeches made yesterday by a democrat at one of the 9-11 services......Instead of keeping it about the families and the victims, he found it an appropriate time to attack GW Bush. He got a lot of static from the crowd for it. There isn't one of them (elected officials) who can waste a moment on camera without turning political.....
