Basic Journalism '099'

June 26, 2007 / by nobullthinker

I rarely read a newspaper. I just can’t tolerate them. But I happened to be sitting next to a guy who was reading Monday’s Chicago Sun-Times and I could not help but notice the headline. I thought I was going to blow out an eyeball!

After the man put the paper down I picked it up to check out the lead story. In the process I happened on two other stories just as disturbing as the first. I have been hearing that newspaper journalism has become biased and intellectually vapid but I had no clue as to how degenerate it had actually become. I simply did not know that it had sunk to this level. So far I have only managed to read three stories but I am holding on to this edition for further scrutiny once I think I’ll be able to stomach it.

WHY DO DADS KILL?

That was the headline that induced me to read this rag. Putting aside the Leftist agenda of minimizing fatherhood and exterminating manliness I was most drawn to the legal aspect of this headline. I don’t know what they teach in journalism school these days but I have always assumed that one of the first lessons was never to condemn the accused in the press. Yet in gigantic letters 1¼ inches high covering a good 20% of the page were those words – Why Do Dads Kill? Beneath those words, also covering about 20% of the page was a close-up photo of Christopher Vaughn, a man accused of murdering his wife and children in cold blood. Turning to the story on the inside pages I found a two page spread dedicated to the case which included a heartbreaking photo of the killer and his family in happier times. And in what may be a new all time low half of one page was dedicated to photos and an interview with the grave diggers.

Now it would be wrong of me to give my opinion on Mr Vaughn’s guilt or innocence before justice makes that determination even though I doubt that my opinion would have any effect on that determination. But the press is another matter. Before this case ever gets to trial everyone in the Western world may have formed an opinion on this case based upon media “reports”. But this tripe is not a media report. It is a conviction in permanent ink. Vilification of a suspect on this scale makes it nearly impossible to find an impartial jury and creates obvious grounds for a retrial if a conviction is ever won.

This is criminal behavior on the part of the Chicago Sun-Times and its editors. I don’t even believe that this story was created for the ordinarily vile motive of selling newspapers. It was done to create social havoc – to create rips in the fabric of society. It is agenda driven and may result in the murderer’s release back into society.

It is my fervent belief that if the cell that is supposed to hold the murderer of this family goes vacant the people responsible for publishing this story ought to be made to fill it.

BLUE-LIGHT CAMERA BREAKS CASE

Over the last 4 years the city of Chicago has spent uncounted million of dollars installing video cameras at the top of light posts to monitor “high crime” areas. To date not a single scrap of evidence of a crime has ever been garnered by these Big Brother oppressors. So it was becoming urgent that the city find some justification for the atrocious expense and the overt invasion of privacy.

On June 11 a 14 year old boy was gunned down in the vicinity of one of these cameras. The camera caught nothing of the actual killing but city officials claim that suspects were seen in a car near the shooting. Who knows if the story is true or not since there was the overriding goal of justifying the spy project to be considered. If it were true it might seem to lend some justification to the project – but read on past the half way point of the story…

“A man driving west on 25th street heard shooting and followed the suspect’s car. The man giving pursuit bumped the suspects’ car three times. The suspects eventually crashed into another car at…. The driver went back to the shooting scene and took Roberto to the hospital…”

Do you understand what’s going on here? The hero is not the hero. According to the headline the hero is Big Brother. The Ministry of Truth has spoken.

Whenever a man stands up to defend his family, his property or even his nation he is condemned when possible and diminished when he cannot be vilified. The State must be all. No one may act anywhere the State claims jurisdiction. A soldier may not fire his weapon without the States’ permission and even in the event that he fires in perfect accordance of the rules of the State his actions can be made cause for conviction. The Ministry of Truth can make it happen. And the media is now an extension of the Ministry.

DESPITE WHAT BUSH SAYS, FIELD MUSEUM SOLD ON EVOLUTION

Along side the title of this article is a drawing of cavemen. Possibly the intent is to draw a mental tie between the caveman and Bush. The primary aim of the headline, however, is unmistakable. It is to drag Bush’s image down by debasing him in an article that has no relevance to him whatever. To do so they invoke the name of one of the world’s foremost authorities on natural history – the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago.

Anyone who does not see that mainstream media is driven by Leftist agendas is either too dull witted to get it or has been intellectually blinded by the media/education/politic cabal. It should not be a mystery to anyone why GW’s poll ratings are so low when the incessant assault by this cabal drones endlessly on in the background.

I suggest that if you find yourself nodding off to the Left you read or reread Orwell’s “1984”. You’re living it and don’t realize it.

    Journalism has devolved into sensationalism.

The senstionalism is only a distraction from the socialist agenda.

Most jpurmalism, but do you not believe there are still objective journalists?[SMILE]

How "objective" can any human being be? How selective are you in what "news" you read? Surely current "journalism" is no worse that talk radio at its best.

Don't have a problem with the commentary pages of newspapers. I have a problem with biased "journalism". Commentary is opinion. Journalism is supposed to be fact.
I am selective about my reading but I am objective in my processing of it.
    Peace out.

The fine line between your definition of journalism and opinion very difficult to define.

You cannot process what you do not hear, see, or read.

Nor can you read everything out there. Rock-.[OHMY]-Hard place.

good post. I avoid the newspapers as well. The Vaughn case is quite bizarre and simply does not seem to make sense to me.

I posted an article today about a female reporter who has been covering the Stebic case was videotaped by another news reporter who happened to be across the street at the time when Amy Jocobson was walking around Craig Stebic's (and Lisa Stebic's) home in a two piece bathing suite. She brought her kids there for a pool party. If interested, you can view the full article on my blog.

She was told to hire an attorney.

This murder makes no sense to anyone who has not come to terms with how depraved a human being can be. It's hard to accept that we are part of the same species as these types.
You are aware by now that Jacobson has been canned. Justified? In the present swamp of journalism she was too incautious.
  • whereabouts said 1 years ago
Yes, aware that she was canned or resigned (they're not confirming one or the other). I know Lisa's family has defended her and I know that she was a huge help in the Reily Fox case and base on that, I suspect she was working on something and just used very poor judgment. Too bad for her but it appears as if she really did overstep her journalistic boundaries.

Did you notice that in response to the "Dads" article, you referred to the accused as "the killer" and "the murderer" a number of times yourself?[HUH] It seems even the thoughtful citizen is capable of premature condemnation.
  • nobullthinker said 1 years ago
Clever of you to catch that. I fell into the trap of writing within the framework constructed by the writer of the article. It is the same trap that will come into play when the jury has to consider Vaughn's guilt or innocence.
