Fox in the Whorehouse

February 19, 2007 / by nobullthinker

I predict a major ratings disappointment for Fox News on its next report card. Its producers clearly do not understand the nature of its viewer base. They apparently believe that they can shovel the same degenerate guff down the throats of their conservative viewers that is clamored for by the mainstream media’s infantile gaggle. If that is what they think they are in for a nasty surprise. Those of us who want substance in our news are not going to put up with it. And the talking head who’s going to take the biggest hit is the untouchable Mr O’reilly.

Whatever happened to that guy who was “looking out for me?” He appears to have devolved into a lecherous creep who gets off on peeking through the keyholes of painted women and deviant actors. I can hardly believe the garbage that has come into my living room through the Fox window since the beginning of this year. Every night its girl fights, child molestation, Paris Hilton, Anna Nicole, body language games, Geraldo, girls gone wild, Brittany Spears and spin meister Dick Morris. Don’t they understand that we turned to Fox to get away from that kind of idiocy?

I know there is news out there. I see America’s freedoms being threatened and denied all over the land. Our political leaders are trying, and at times succeeding, in passing laws that tell us what we can eat, what kind of speech we can listen to and even what language will be spoken in our schools. As I drive through the streets of Chicago I see cameras strapped to light poles recording every move of the citizenry ala “1984”. People have been gunned down and run down by crazed or directed Muslims with hardly a word of recognition from the guy who’s “looking out for me.”

I expect this kind of moral blindness from people like Olbermann, Stewart and Kuric, et al. But I have to admit that I was fooled for a while into thinking that Fox had found a couple of guys who had principles along with backbones that would allow them to stand for higher moral values.

I have come to despair that my political vote means nothing any more. But at least I have the satisfaction of knowing that my TV vote counts. I still get a twinge of pleasure out of pressing the off button on my remote at about 7 PM CST.

You were tod, Nobull, by me (and probably by your own common sense) that Fox, like all the so-called media is a business. They sell "news" and if the brand they've been peddling ain't doing so hot, they'll change to a new brand. You should watch the news channel I watch . . . the modern equivalent of the Mickey Mouse Club . . . MSNBC (sans Olbermann), Tucker followed by Hardball. I had O'Reilly spotted as a pornigrapher back when he was pimping Mel Gibson movies.
  • nobullthinker said 1 years ago
I make the extra effort to try to catch Tucker. I know that he's required to do his quota of pimp and puff but his honesty comes through on issues where he has personal opinions. Matthews? He doesn't just have opinions he has agendas that he pushes rabidly - well beyond the limits of honesty.

I never allow myself to forget that the "news" is now as much entertainment as it is news. But it still effects people's views. I just want an honest conservative view to be represented on the tube somewhere.

    Comments always appreciated.

Would you also welcome an "honest liberal view," or would you consider that an oxymoron. Or how about just an "honest view." Which of course brings up the question: what's the meaning of the word "honest"? A person who says exactly what he believes may indeed be honest, while at the same time being dead wrong. But an objective reporting of facts -- i.e., what happened, where and when, what was said by whom, where and when -- would appear to be possible though still subject to mistakes. Nevertheless, that's what I think is meant by the word "news." Nearly all of what is peddled by media news sources does not qualify as news. Sure, there's a kernel of who, what, where, when in there somewhere, but it is so well concealed behind opinion and selectivity it is almost impossible to find. Too much of the "news" is designed, as you say, to appeal to our entertainment needs rather than to our need to know facts. What's more, people in high places -- the news makers -- know this so they slant their public personae to fit as well as they can into the media's methodology. Hence, those people -- with only a few exceptions (I know of only one) -- are not honest people. They do not act and speak from their "whatness" but rather from their expectation of how they will be perceived.

The one exception I have noticed is Jim Webb. If he is not who he appears to be then he has not yet learned to play the game. The last may be true, and continued exposure to the "rules of the game" may transmogrify him into another political beast. If that happens then I will have no one to look to as an example of what it means to hold high office while remaining honest.

I have watched many of the Leftist commentators. And I don't question the honesty of most of them. I think Olbermann is an exception. I believe he knowingly exaggerates beyond truthfulness in order to inflame his viewers.

I will also tell you honestly that I have never been able to gauge the relativity of intelligence in Leftism. It seems that they have an abilty to rationalize equal to that of the Right but they incorporate far too much emotion into their calculations. Thus they factor in how they feel when sometimes it belies the facts.

As to your main points I generally choose my media sources based on two criteria: [1] Who keeps me abreast of the events that have meaningful effects on society and history. [2] Who offers fresh perspectives on issues that concern me.

nobull: Your displeasure toward Fox News is, as they say, "on the money." Unfortunately, news programs are part commentary, part news, whether conservative or
so-called liberals, they parade their biases openly. The anti-dote, I think, is to turn to
CBS, NBC, ABC, and the Lehrer report. Much more objective approach, an no bashing of either conservative or liberal positions.

I am not unaware that there is a certain amount of pandering to my right wing mind set at FOX and in the programing at other networks as well. And there is something to be said for the lack of overt positioning at the starched collar networks. The fact is that I need to check out editorial style news if only to know I'm not alone in my views. I've said many times here at Blogster that the Right had been denied its free speech for more than thirty years. Throughout that period I thought I was going nuts. The Left was insisting that two and two was five and no one was permitted to correct them. Everyone in the media was in agreement, every teacher bobbed his head every politician was shouting amen. Everyone thought that the visions of 1984 had passed without fulfillment. Everyone was wrong. 1984 had actually come a decade or more early. Thought control had become pervasive in all three areas of responsibilities for information dissemination; education, media and politics,

In case you're not aware of it I should add that the main stream media does color our world views. Their chief means of control is to withhold information or to under report events that expose the falsity of their positions.

    Thanks

The above news outlets are objective? What about CBS and the phoney documents? Wasn't it NBC that had a memo during the Clinton Presidency that the term "scandal" could not be used in conjunction with the president's name. I may be wrong that it was NBC but one instructed their commentators to use "attack" "trouble" etc. Also, in the 1990s then NBC president Michael Gartner stated that nobody in America had any need for a handgun and that the Constitution needed to be changed. That would certainly explain their covering of gun issues during that time period.
Remember Tom Brokaw and his handling of Pennsylvania during the 2000 Gore-Bush election night?
All media outlets are biased, it is human nature. My answer is a national syndicated Libertarian talk show host. He has no use for either for the two major parties and will give "the skinny" on both. Of course he may call for one party more strongly than another but I believe one party deserves to get called on the carpet more than the other.

When the WSJ editorial board was on TV laying out their positions I was disappointed with their presentations and stopped watching. They weren't as convincing in person as in print. Anyone else observe them in action?
  • nobullthinker said 1 years ago
Sorry, can't comment. Never watched the program.

I've been casually watching Bill'o for years - like yourself. I once thought that there was substance in his program - like yourself. Now I'm not sure if there ever was substance there. I do know that there isn't much there now.

You say that you've only recently begun to take politics seriously? Once you get into it you will begin to see that Fox News is not what you thought it was. I hope you will get back to me with occasional progress reports.

What really gripes me is when these people have someone on their show and ask them questions, but never let them answer them, happens on all stations. Why bother if the commentaters will not let the people, they get to come on their show, not answer the questions they ask?[HUH][HUH]

I agree that it's terribly frustrating but you have to understand that there are practical as well as personal reasons for these kinds of tactics. There are all kinds of methodology in play in talk shows both on radio and TV. I would never call into a talk show because professional hosts have control and have specific ways of winning every argument. One method a host will use if the argument is not going his way is to demand that the caller "produce" hard evidence to support his opinion. This puts the caller imediately on the defensive and requires him to come up with names and dates under pressure. Few people can perform under those conditions. It's a dirty trick but I think it adds spice to the game if it is not overdone.

    Thanks for dropping by.

This is why Fox News is commonly referred to by Independents as Faux News.

While you have abyssmal manners, you do make good points occassionally.

When you agree to stop preemptively attacking people who view things differently, you will appear more mature and less like a schoolyard bully who relies on childlike epithets so as not to have to actually consider that someone with a different view might actually have a reasonable and rational basis for it.

Were you to even modestly research the alleagtions I speak of regarding vote rigging in the 2002 and 2004 elections, you might have to actually open up your mind for a change.
