A Trilogy of Socialist Decline

November 7, 2007 / by nobullthinker

Unless there is an occurrence of an event of great enough impact to penetrate the wall of public apathy and denial it appears that Hillary will be our next President. If that were to happen our long slide into Socialism will go into an irreversible free-fall. And then, who knows, perhaps book burning will come into fashion once again.

It could certainly happen. Free thought and free speech are always the archenemies of tyrannical governments. Socialist tyrannies in particular have invariably demonstrated their ruthless determination to eradicate them. Never in America, you say? No nation on earth or in history has ever valued or safeguarded free speech and free thought as powerfully as the USA has. We will fight to the death to protect these rights, you say? They are a part of the soul of America. They are at the heart of our Constitution.

Jabberwocky! Those were the words and ideas of wise and stout men. This generation has neither that kind of common sense nor the spine to defend such high ideals. It has been educated out of us. We have been sensitized, feminized and socialized to the point that we can only parrot the old ideals; we cannot defend them. Do you really believe that anyone of this generation would die in defense of free speech? Who, then, stood up last month and pledged his life to stand against the Democrat threat to destroy talk-radio? How many Americans even understood that this was a blatant attack on free speech, free thought and the soul of the Constitution? Hardly anyone but the talkers themselves understood it and even some of them could not think of this threat as more than a personal attack on their livelihoods.

Free speech is facing a clear and present danger. And, as always, this danger emanates from our nation’s own rulers. But what is the first and most essential step to fending off this threat? Making people aware that there is a threat to begin with. The primary responsibility for alerting the public to threats of this nature is shared by:
1. Political insiders.
2. Teachers.
3. Media.

As it now stands all three of these community organs are dominated by Socialist ideology and have become instruments for spreading the infection rather than being the cure for it. None of them is trustworthy though some individuals and elements within them still are. Talk-radio, for example, is our last best source for open discussion, political awareness and unfettered news from every social perspective. But it has its drawbacks. Once listeners have chosen their broadcaster’s preferred social perspectives the emotional impact of his message begins to wear away. The voices fade into the listener’s background and the urgency of the need to act subsides.

The impact of talk-radio is further limited by the fact that each radio has an off/on switch. With the political/media/education complex beginning the liberal indoctrination of our young at earlier and earlier stages the response of each new generation is to be more intolerant of conservatism than the last. The conservative message has become the screeching of chalk in the tabula rasa of our children’s minds. For too many of them the immediate reaction to the voices of conservative talk-radio is to instantly switch to some soothing rap music or to turn the damn thing off entirely.

The Socialist/Democrats are determined to wipe out the last vestiges of free speech and when they have accomplished that there will be nothing left to stand in the way of their destroying free thought. The last bastion of free thought, as we all must acknowledge, will be literature – the printed word. That is what the Socialists will come for next and that can only mean book burning.

In light of that eventuality I suggest a mental exercise. Ask yourself this question: What books would I select for preservation if today (not tomorrow or some vague fantasy future) I was ordered by government to surrender all of my books save three?

After careful thought I’ve decided that I would choose “Atlas Shrugged” for one because it describes the socio-political state that exists today. It points out the direction we are heading in and the processes by which we are being led there.

My second choice would be “1984” by George Orwell because it describes the conditions we will find when we arrive at the Socialist utopia that is being devised for us.

My third choice would by my last-hope grab for sanity’s sake; “I Never Promised You a Rose Garden” by Joanne Greenberg.

These three books probably will not prevent our descent into the chaos of Socialist tyranny. What they can do for future generations is make them aware that they have been enslaved (“1984”), allow them to find their way back down the path that brought them there (“Atlas Shrugged”) and give them some insight into why their forebearers brought them there so they might never go there again (“ I Never Promised You a Rose Garden”).

“Atlas Shrugged” and “1984” are obvious choices and are clear in their political messages. “…Rose Garden”, on the other hand, has no designed political agenda. It merely describes an individual’s unique struggle to maintain her sanity. We might think that one person’s struggle to retain a grasp on sanity my seem irrelevant to our present socio-political condition but when considered in the larger dimensions of a society choosing a path to chaos the question of mass insanity is entirely relevant. Why does it seem that the majority of our population is embracing these policies of social destruction? Is this sane behavior?

I believe that “…Rose Garden” can be understood in the larger sense of social insanity. I think that there are powerful people with sociopathic tendencies leading us to irrationality as a constant in our thinking. I will try to clarify that position in future posts.

You portray a scary scenario and I hope you are proved wrong. I hope America wakes up and rejects the Democrats and their Socialist agenda. Just in case you are right I am going to try to find "I Never Promised You A Rose Garden" and re-read the other two which I haven't read recently.

I hope I'm wrong, too. Voltaire says that I am crying wolf. I'm not crazy about the imagery that implies but he may be right. On the other hand WW II might have been avoided had anyone listened to Churchill when he cried wolf. Nazi-ism did not creep up on the German people, it was sprung on them like a bear trap. It was the manner in which the people were lured into the trap that few people to this day understand. If "...Rose Garden" does not seem relevant to the creeping of Socialism the key is in the seduction of fantasy.
    Thanks for dropping in.

Too subtle in its satire. Its message goes over too many people's heads. "1984" paints a picture in such stark detail that even the blind could not fail to see Orwell's vision. I read "Animal Farm" again this year myself. It is a classic and a great source for imagery and citation. Loved it but could not take it off my list in favor of "1984".

nobull: You call yourself a critical scholar, and there is nothing in this post that signifies you are critical or a scholar. Apparently you have learned nothing from "1984" because you are one of the perpetrators of doublespeak. You offer no citations, no evidence, no substantiation, just reckless charges. Either you think you are Nostradamus or a wise sage.
On the one hand you write some interesting and sane posts, some of which I find myself in
agreement, others not. But they were rational. I found interesting your post on Ayn Rand and her novel, even tthough I deplore her views. I don't think this post represents the "objectivism" which you apparently admire. This post casts you among the "idiotlogues" of my post not long ago. It bothers me not that you warn about socialism. What is disturbing that someone of your intelligence is crying, "wolf, wolf!" when there is no wolf.
You are a pied piper who would lead his followers, like lemmings, into the sea from your cozy postion behind your computer. Unfortunately, my remarks will roll off you like water from a raincoat. You are above it all, and that is a shame, because you do have a good mind. But then, nobullthinker shrugged. So be it.[MAD]

    Point by point:
    1. I call myself a critical scholar on the basis of my study of Bible origins. Beyond that I am no scholar but I am hard core in my critical thinking.
    2. In this particular post you are correct in saying that I did a lot of generalizing but it suits the purpose and I see no fault in that.
    3. You deplore Rand's philosophy? I hope you will expand on the reasons for it some time.
    4. I was not trying to represent objectivist thought in this post except as it relates to reality based thinking.
    5. Maybe I do go overboard to the extent that it sounds like I'm crying wolf but are you denying that there is a wolf? Do you doubt that a "1984" style Socialist tyranny is closing in on us? Or do you simply not believe that Socialism invariably leads to tyranny?
    6. I have all the knowledge necessary to build a flock of lemmings - hell, if Algore can do it almost anyone can. But the desire to do it does not exist in me.
    7. Since all of your remarks were pretty general and in the nature of personal attacks you are correct again - they will roll off like water on a raincoat.

    So be dat. [TONGUE]

Unlike my friend voltaire, I share your grim view of what could happen, but perhaps I'm more optimistic about this generation, at least judging by my pride in my own children. I love your book selections. I've read them all. Each of them is powerful and valuable. It got me thinking but I'm afraid I can't come to any easy choices for myself. If worse came to worse, I'd probably try to rescue my bible, my entire (and extensive) library of philosophy books, and my boyhood Boy Scout Handbook.

I have three grown children. I could brag for hours but I'll try to be succinct. They are all extremely intelligent but they are also highly educated. They have the highest ideals but, of course, they are liberal ideals. They strive to be great citizens in the "family of man" but have been taught not to embrace flag and country - that would show bigotry. I believe that in their hearts they want the best for their country and that is why (they would say) they would be willing to burn its flag when it came to certain issues.
They are great people but their values have been misdirected. They cannot see the flaws in Socialism and embrace it rather than fear it. They are little "Voltaires" who have been immersed in liberal education for so long that they cannot see outside their indoctrinations. That is not to say that my kids, or even Voltaire, are not intelligent or are in any way personally flawed - except that they've learned their lessons too well.
As you say, our children are the hope for the generation that follows them. Our mistakes have already been made. In order for them not to compound our mistakes someone has to point out what we did wrong.
Our pride in our children gives us hope. We know them and we know they are good people. It is right that we have high hopes.

nobull: The trouble I have is this: Nazism was not socialism; but you connect government programs to "socialism." Some of Soviet Union's program was socialistic, but its attack
on the kulaks were not. If you equate socialism with government programs, then, okay, let it be your definition. And we can work from there.
As to your children, they sound great. Not because they are liberals. I know some libeerals I do not think well of. But because they sound like genuine, warm people who want the best for America and mankind. You should be proud of them (and you are), and I agree that the future lies with them.
Churchill's warnings were ignored because the powers that be at that time were more fearful of the Soviets than they were of the Nazis. Communism! And why? Because the powers that ran the UK saw communism as competition. That was what the cold war on both sides was about: economic superiority. The same holds true today. Anyone who believes we are "introducing" democracy to the Iraquians are living in la la land. It is all about who controls the economy.
You handle me very well, nobull, and I appreciate your thick skin. Stay well.

I'd love to comment on your above perceptions but I'd rather leave you in peace if you'd prefer I hold my tongue.
    Thanks for the bouquet.

    Well written.

Based on the reality of government surveillance on peaceful assembly, this government we currently have is a paranoid mess ... based on the skeletons in Hillary and Bill's closets, it is reasonable to predict, as you have, the further unraveling of our former democratic way of life, unless there is greater voter turn-out ...

As for the debate on Nazism and Soviet style socialism, the far left and right are evil twins ...

Bush is simply more fascist in his leanings, but I believe a Hillary White House would be no friend of Freedom either ...

Can anyone say, "Since the Clintons are just as cocaine corrupted as the Bush Crime Family, let's vote for some new non-bribed political blood"???

    [SMILE]

I live outside the US, because I got tired of feeling I was stuck in a bad Kafka novel...

September 11th was known about in advance and the Bush clowns let it happen ... power made them arrogant .. the Clintons would have done like-wise, more than likely ... when I wrote about the way the intel community helped the Bushes rig the 2004 "Elections", I got a death threat for my efforts... I would do it all again ... let cowards hide ... the Truth is Divine ...

I prefer to live outside the paraniod nation America has become ...

I don't plan to live in the US as long as a Bush or a Clinton occupy the Big White House at 1600 Transylvania Avenue ...

    Nobullthinker:

I have decided to visit you for more lessons in sanity and common sense. What you have written is the truth. At times, I feel we are heading towards a dictatorship and at times, I feel that we are heading towards a civil war.

If I could rescue three books, it would be 1. The Bible 2. A Purpose Driven Life, and 3. My Personal Photo Album. It is easy to cross your arms and accept things as they are or leave the USA. I am willing to stay and attempt to stop the onslaught. I do not like Bush BUT I do not like Clinton, Obama and Company. In fact, Obama made speeches about defending the "African Race in America" in some circles in Iowa [I heard it in my Windows Media Player].

I had received a photo from a friend which showed all of the Democratic Party saluting the American Flag during the National Anthem like if they were receiving an enema. Obama just simply put his hands on his genitalia during the National Anthem.

My only complaint is thay you forget that the UN, OAS, World Bank, the Kyoto Protocol, and IMF are also part of the Socialist Agenda. Well take care and hope you had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

    Roberto

PD: If you visit my blog, do not think I agree with some of the things posted. I just post them with permission so that people could see what is happening in America. Another reason is so people can look and then decide.

Good to hear from you again. I see that you are still out there fighting the good fight. Don't let it get to you. Things are not as bad as they seem and I have new hope that good leadership will be making a comeback.
Your book choices were interesting. I had not thought of a personal photo album. As for the Bible - I'm afraid that it is impossible for people to be objective about it. It can be used for both good and evil. Understood objectively it is a powerful tool for understanding human behavior.
I believe that your pursuit of an alternative political party is futile. First because such parties have no chance and second because they offer no better alternatives than we already have. Better to improve the parties that exist. I think that will happen in the Republican party in the upcoming election.
